Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father's death as a carnival barker, at the age of an infant, she had to help provide for the family by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth was raised in the poor Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She went to school there. However, she was only in school for a couple of years, then leaving to pursue her acting profession. It was a difficult path to pursue. While she was offered an opportunity in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication, no theatre jobs were offered to her. Then, she worked as the hat checker in an evening club, before deciding to call her quits and relocating to Boston. There she earned a living in the ushering industry during the in the daytime, while at night she performed with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first role as an actor. The study of drama helped her to receive a degree in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
